Our road trips in East Africa began at the Hotel Chez Lando in Kigali, Rwanda, when we hopped in Carson and Holly's Nissan Hardbody truck to head toward Geita. This involved loading all of the baggage we had brought from America, the things they had brought from Geita for the two-day stay in Kigali when we first arrived, and the cooler of meat and other supplies we had bought there.
Carson's skill as a driver was soon evident, as he wound among pedestrians, bicyclists, and some very interesting drivers through the city.
Wayne was interested in the number of workers busy on a ditch construction project.
We saw many trucks on the roads everywhere we went. They travelled with us on pavement and on deeply rutted dirt roads. The journey from Kigali to Geita includes both.

The Rwandan countryside is very green. Banana trees grow all along the road to the Tanzanian border.
Once we were in Tanzania, we made a short stop on the side of the road. A crowd of children quickly gathered, fascinated with Jude, the mzungu baby. They were beautiful.
The Tanzanian countryside is not quite as green, and there are fewer people along the road.
The picture below shows our traveling arrangement - Carson at the wheel (on the right side, European style), Wayne riding shotgun, with Holly and me on either side of Jude. This was made while he was temporarily free from his carseat as we waited on the ferry to cross a portion of Lake Victoria on our way to Mwanza, the subject of a future post.
Wayne took the video below as we bumped along a rough section of road, with pedestrians and bikers on both sides:
